Body Contouring

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tucks) and Liposuction

Abdominoplasty and body contouring, these procedures can be performed in different ways depending on where your problem area and concerns are.

If the region of your concerns is from the umbilicus (belly button) down to the pubic region, then this can usually be accomplished with a lower abdominoplasty (mini-tummy tuck) or possibly liposuction alone. The incision for a mini-tuck goes across the lower pubic region. A short scar bikini cut technique is used with the mini-tummy tuck procedures.

If your main region of concern is below the umbilicus, with some fatty deposits above the umbilicus also, this is usually corrected using a combination of a lower abdominoplasty with liposuction of the upper abdomen.

If the whole abdomen needs to be treated, from the ribs down to the pubic region, then a full abdominoplasty, along with tightening of the abdominal muscles and repositioning of the new belly button needs to be performed. In most cases of abdominoplasty surgery, one or two drains are placed under the skin for 5-7 days. In all cases you are placed in an abdominal binder (girdle) for 4-6 weeks after the surgery. You cannot shower until the drains are removed. After the drains are removed you can remove your binder daily and shower. You need to place the binder back on your abdomen after showering. Dr. Chidyllo does not recommend any sports, gym, lifting or exercise for approximately 4-6 weeks after the surgery, however, he does recommend daily walking to improve the circulation in your legs and to reduce swelling.

Abdominoplasty is performed as a same day surgery under anesthesia. The surgery takes between 1-3 hours depending on which surgical procedure is required. You follow up in the office in 1-2 days after the surgery.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure which is performed routinely in the practice. The most common problem areas needing to be recontoured are the abdomen, hips, thighs and buttocks. Commonly in men, the regions most desired to be recontoured are the waist (love handles) and the chest region.

The tumescent technique for liposuction is used on most cases. Fluid is injected underneath the skin in the regions where liposuction is to be performed. This fluid is removed along with the desired fat. The procedure is a same day operation requiring approximately 1-2 hours. You go home shortly afterwards wearing a compressing garment. You need to wear this garment until you are examined in the office in 1-2 days. You cannot shower until the garment is removed and the regions of liposuction examined. You are required to wear a garment for approximately 1-2 months after the surgery. This pressure garment allows the skin to adequately recontour to the underlying muscles. It takes approximately 3-6 months until the final results are seen.

Most surgical procedures are performed at one of the regional surgical facilities. Surgery is only performed at NJ State certified surgical facilities under the direction of Board Certified anesthesiologists. You would need to be examined in consultation in order to make a determination as to which of the above procedures is right for your case. In most cases of Body Contouring a combination of a skin tightening procedure (tummy-tuck) along with liposuction is required to accomplish the desired results.
