Dr. Chidyllo is well trained in all techniques of breast reconstruction. A patient can either have breast reconstruction as Immediate Reconstruction (at the same time as their mastectomy) or Delayed Reconstruction (at a date after their mastectomy). Today women have multiple options concerning the type and timing of their breast reconstruction.
Breast reconstruction can be performed utilizing Prosthetic Materials, a breast implant and or tissue expander or Autologous Tissue (patient’s own tissue). Dr. Chidyllo performs both types of reconstructions in his practice. The type of breast reconstruction a woman receives depends upon many factors, which are reviewed during the preoperative consultation.
Concerning the use of prosthetic materials, women have the choice of utilizing either Silicone Gel as well as Saline implants for their reconstruction. Dr. Chidyllo has dedicated years of his career into perfecting the Tissue Expander/Breast Implant reconstruction techniques.
Dr. Chidyllo is a clinical investigator with the Mentor Silicone Breast Implant Study. This allows Dr. Chidyllo to enroll women into the Mentor Silicone Breast Implant Study and utilize Silicone implants in women requiring breast reconstruction, and in certain cases of cosmetic breast surgery.
Dr. Chidyllo has extensive experience and training in the treatment of leaking or ruptured silicone breast implants. These implants should be removed (explantation) soon after the diagnosis has been made. Women who have already had silicone breast implants may be candidates to be enrolled in the Silicone Breast Implant Study. This gives these women the choice of either replacing their leaking silicone implants with either the new generation of silicone breast implants or saline implants.
Some women choose not to replace their breast implants after they are removed. In this case a breast lift or mastopexy may be the procedure of choice to lift and reshape the loose breast tissue which exists after the removal of the silicone implants.
The removal of leaking or ruptured silicone breast implants is usually covered in part by most health insurance plans. However the replacement of new breast implants, either silicone or saline, or a breast lift is usually not covered by health insurance, unless the surgery is associated with a breast reconstruction for the treatment of breast disease or congential breast deformity.
Dr. Stephen Chidyllo is one of a few board certified plastic surgeons who has completed training in both Plastic Surgery and Dentistry. This combined training has given him the added expertise necessary to treat both common as well as complex facial injuries. After completion of his plastic surgical residency, Dr. Chidyllo has pursued additional fellowship training in the field of Cranio-Maxillofacial Reconstruction. This fellowship provided Dr. Chidyllo with the additional exposure and expertise to treat complex facial fractures and injuries.
Some of the common facial reconstructive procedures performed are:
Soft tissue reconstruction subsequent to dog bite injuries, motor vehicle injuries, work related injuries and sports related injuries.
Boney reconstruction of the Facial Bones, subsequent to: Motor Vehicle Accidents, Sports Related Injuries, Work Related Injuries and Domestic Homeowner Accident.
Common surgeries performed are those of: Primary repair and reconstruction of maxillofacial bones. The Mandible (lower jaw), Maxilla (upper jaw), Orbits (bones about the eyes), Frontal Bones and Sinuses (forehead), and Nasal Bones.
Dr. Chidyllo performs both Primary (at the time of the initial accident) as well as Secondary (weeks to years after the accident) Facial Bone Reconstruction. Sometimes after the bones have healed, due to scar tissue and /or dento-facial forces, the bones do not heal in the correct alignment resulting in either a dental deformity (crooked bit) or a dento-facial deformity (crooked face, chin, nose, eyes or jaws). Occasional it is necessary to surgically re-brake the bones to correct the deformity and fixate the bones with plates, screws or bone grafts. Dr. Chidyllo performs Orthognathic Reconstruction Surgery when a dento-facial deformity (one jaw is larger or smaller than the other) exists either from birth (congential) or after an accident (acquired).
